The Golden Pavilion (2015)

The creative process behind the patterns used in the installation
I started thinking about the Golden Pavilion project a year ago while remembering with delight a scene from one of my favorite movie ever made; Mishima: A life in four chapters.
The movie is divided into four chapters: Beauty, Art, Action, and Harmony of the Pen and Sword. One of those chapters is highly inspired by The Temple of the Golden Pavilion's novel. The story is narrated by Mizoguchi, who recounts his obsession with beauty and the growth of his urge to destroy it.
From a distorted memory of movie scene and the strong impression of the theme, the Golden Pavilion project started to take form.
The first step was to sketch the temple and patterns and to search for textures and color palettes references.
